In 1897, the city of Santa Monica bought the rights to own The Woodlawn Cemetery. Then, 30 years later in 1927, the cemetery built a mausoleum. The city didn't own it until 1972. Now the cemetery and mausoleum are the city's most historical locations to the community. The Cemetery can connect to many objectives like food, shelter, deities, Mortality and Immortal. Some examples would be the mausoleum as a place to worship. The graves are open for the public so they can decorate their loved ones tombs the way they want. For example, when its the Day of the Dead, if the families from the loved one are traditional, they would fix up their tomb with a Mexican style and food. The tomb would symbolize immortality and mortality in which the tomb are would be the place where the body and soul rest.

Woodlawn Cemetery is a multicultural graveyard that grants a peaceful environment for the community in Santa Monica.  The cemetery holds multiple community events every year including: Living History Tours, Holiday Open Houses, and Day of the Dead celebrations making it an important communal area of Santa Monica.  There is a beautiful Mausoleum which have images painted by the famous and unknown Hugo Ballin.

As mentioned before, the graveyard contains several tombs that represents the place the person's body and soul rest. This connects to the Temple of Hatshesput, in where we see where the location of the tomb of the great pharaoh Hatsheput. In a quick summary the temple is suppose to represent a beautiful place in which Hatshesput will rest in peace once she died. The temple had a small garden in which is suppose to give it a paradise look where the soul of Hatshesput will rest. Same goes with the tombs in Santa Monica's Woodlawn Cemetery. The graveyard is all green which can represent a peaceful place for the body and soul to rest.

The mausoleum can be connected to many places of worship. Mainly Islamic architecture. In many Islamic temples they have fine detailed carvings in their walls and in many entrances they have an arch that many in Muslim culture call the arch that never sleeps. The arch design soon spread across Europe because of its efficiency. Then it spread all around the globe. The mausoleum definitely took a lot of inspiration from Islamic architecture as it bears a huge arch in the entrance as well as some detailed patterns on the wall.  Today the mausoleum is the final resting place to many silent film actors.

This domed central building known as the Elks Pavilion is a very notable structure in Woodlawn Cemetery

The elks pavilion also known as (the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks) is a fraternal organization based on religion, founded in 1867 New York City.Although religion is a key part of the club being inducted into the BPOE is a different ball game. Some of the requirements feature being a citizen of the United States, exceeding the age of twenty one and having a strong Belief in god.

It has features that are very similar to Greco-Roman architecture as well as some other inspirations.  The dome on top of the pavilion is much like the dome of the Parthenon in Rome.  The columns of the pavilion are fluted and also have capitals reminiscent of the Greek Ionic order of architecture.  The Friezes above these columns are lightly decorated with a simple pattern. The pavilion also has stairs on each side of the structure much like the Mayan Pyramid known as El Castillo at Chichen Itza.

The Woodlawn Cemetery is a sacred place to bury anyone loved ones in order to let them rest at peace and each culture has their own form putting their loved ones to rest. It is about religion and culture that matters to people when it comes to burying anyone. The whole cemetery can connect to mortality an immortality. Just like the Viking ship, the Vikings bid their friends or closed ones goodbye by putting them on a ship because sailing was their life and it was a more successful way to cremate someone without hurting themselves. By burning the body the Vikings believed that the smoke would lift up and carry their them to the afterlife.
